Howdy! Welcome to our world of dysfunctionality! We're thrilled to have you join us.
You don’t have any dysfunction in your world? We're excited to meet you!
Mind if we move in?
We could use a little break from Fred—who spends half his day gossiping in the break room—and Suzy, who always has a “better” way to do things, but never actually follows through.
We will be using the names Fred and Suzy in our posts. Why? Well, to protect the guilty. Yes, sometimes we need to protect the guilty from themselves. But most times, we need to protect everyone from themselves.
Huh?
Yup, we need to protect ourselves from our own biases. So here is our disclaimer.
Every time we hear a bad story about someone, we immediately think of someone we know that fits the description. At OMG.Coach, we call it the Friend or Foe Syndrome.
The Foe Syndrome works like this. If you’re having a problem with anyone, you immediately will believe anything bad about that individual, even without proof. The person may even deny it, and you still won’t believe them.
The Friend Syndrome is very similar. If you hear about a problem with your friend, you will listen for a moment, then think maybe, and ask for proof. If there is none, you still say maybe? And you might or might not go talk to your friend.
No matter if a person is a friend or a foe, if a scenario reminds you of someone, you will assign that behavior to them. No proof required.
That's why we hide the names of our offenders. We take cover behind Fred and Suzy. We truly believe that Fred’s and Suzy’s everywhere are wonderful role models rather than dysfunctional team members.
Please don’t hold any real Fred’s or Suzy’s accountable for our use of their names.
Thank you for listening…
You All Know Them. Work with Them. Live with Them
It sounds so easy. It's actually really hard.
Fred and Suzy are the worst. The worst employee, the worst boss, the worst senior leader, and what's even worse, the worst friend. They always promise the world. They never deliver anything.
They are always late, they are too early, they are rude, uncaring and obnoxious. If there's anyone that will throw YOU under the bus, (thump, thump) it's Fred and Suzy. What's worse? They will back up the bus (thump, thump) and run over you again (thump, thump).
I'm sure that right now, you can picture Fred or Suzy in your head. They are in your nightmares, you cringe when their name is mentioned, and you hide when they walk your way.
Are we clear who Fred and Suzy are? I hope so, because they are right outside your door.
Oh wait, you don't have a door?
Ok, they are right outside your cubicle wall. They are right outside the bathroom stall. They are hovering in the break room.
They are waiting for YOU.
